Emergency Medicine is not divided into specific areas of practice. Emergency room visitors come in all shapes and sizes, at any time of day or night, with a wide range of maladies. Emergency physicians need to become experts in diverse areas of medicine and to be able to make quick and informed decisions about patient care. A cornerstone of emergency medicine training is the constant drilling and re-drilling of simulated cases and clinical scenarios. This book offers a unique yet underutilized strategy for learning a case-based approach from real patients and actual events. Each case provides the opportunity for learning essential clinical concepts. Focused exclusively on the needs of in-training emergency physicians and nurses, the book covers more than 100 common and unusual cases in emergency medicine. The procedures have been class-tested by the Stanford/Kaiser Emergency Medicine Residency Program.

The case presentation format of this text is a great way to learn -- it catches my attention and keeps it since each summary is short and sweet. I enjoyed the diagnostic challenge of each case and the immediate gratification of each case review. There are photos, lab results, xrays and EKGs for each presentation to help bring the cases to life. It's more fun than opening a textbook and reading through each condition. Great choice of cases and very nicely written with attention to detail. This will be a nice addition to your library, especially if you're tired of the same old Tintanelli and Rosen. The cases are bread and butter, with a twist, so you can buff up on your differentials. Entertainment like no other. Great job!

Clinical Emergency Medicine Casebook 9780511581342 Medicine Health Science Books Reviews

This book by Dr. Joel Levis is a great collection of clinical vignettes, enjoyable to read and educational. Each case is presented in an organized, concise manner with relevant images and clinical data, allowing the reader to come up with his or her own diagnosis before turning the page and finding the answer. The discussion section of each case highlights the most up to date treatment and management of each diagnosis along with key teaching points. Highly recommend this book for anyone not only in Emergency Medicine, but any clinician wanting to read up on acute presentations on illnesses you don't want to miss in clinic, urgent care, or in-hospital.
Good review for ED physicians and general practitioners... )
I have really enjoyed reading Clinical Emerngency Medicine Casebook by Levis and Garmel. The book is written in a case based format. Each case is presented in a way that allows the reader to work through the history and physical and then try to come up with the solution. Each case is then followed by a brief, yet very informative discussion with current and pertinent references.

The text is loaded with photos, xrays, EKGS, etc. The book is an easy and entertaining read - but still teaches and re-inforces both key principles of Emergency Medicine and some rarely seen but important topics. I have been practicing Emergency Medicine for 10 years and have found this book as a great addition to my preparation for board recertification.
Clinical Emergency Medicine Casebook lives up to its title as a clinically relevant reference. Categorized by major organ systems one gets the opportunity to review case presentations in a standardized format complete with copious illustrations. Be the super sleuth. Read the history, know the physical exam, have key evaluation parameters and take a stab at the diagnosis. Answers are thorough including key teaching points and references. Compare your work ups to those of the experts. Are you ordering too many or too few tests for a given complaint? Think about the last patient you saw with this presentation and see if you would have missed this diagnosis. Learn from the detailed and informative case reviews. It is a somewhat novel but very helpful approach to work towards the diagnosis, as we do everyday in real practice, rather than look up a condition and work backwards. With traditional methods of presentation we may be able to recite a litany of facts regarding any specific diagnosis but would we recognize it in the Emergency Department? Well written, thought provoking and educational. Well received by attendings and residents. Nice work Levis and Garmel!
Found great value in reading clinical cases. Material is up to date and well written. It has added to my ability to practice clinical medicine.
I use this book to prepare topics of discussion in our clinical group and for teaching emergency medicine. The patietns are real and as such the clues are not "text book" perfect. Thus the Dx might be the second or third on your DDX. The topic are covered well, the explainations are clear.
