For girls of the Tuscarora Nation in the Carolinas (1711), playing lacrosse is forbidden, but Running-Girl, 13, doesn’t care. She’s not a maiden yet, and besides, she’s absolutely no good at women’s chores.
But Running-Girl is afraid. She’s having flash-visions—dead bodies strewn about the lacrosse field; her village bursting into flames. She tells no one, but the visions become more detailed during her Maidenhood seclusion. They show the death and destruction of her village and her parents.
When she shares her visions with the Clan Mothers of the village, her name is changed to Vision-Seeker in honor of the gift Creator has given her. However, her Clan Mother cannot help her interpret the meaning of her visions and many in the village don’t believe her … until the attack comes.
The Vision Seeker, a Tale of the Tuscarora, is an historical YA novel set in North Carolina, 1711-1713.

I chose a five star rating for this book because it is excellent on all counts for young adults. The vocabulary is appropriate, and not only is the story engaging, but it is historically and culturally spot on. In reading this book, a young adult gets a wonderful dose of history, a wonderful dose of the real culture of the early Americans, in an enjoyable way. It's not crammed down their throats. The author is obviously a good story teller and, if not an early American herself, has certainly done her research.Joan West

The Vision Seeker A Tale of the Tuscarora eBook Mary Lois Sanders Reviews
When the British come, and destroy a Tuscaroran settlement, the young survivors suddenly have adult responsibilities thrust upon them. They rise to the task superbly in this wonderful story. Mary Lois Sanders must have done a lot of research to write such an authentic tale harkening back to before the United States was the United States. Yet the research doesn’t take over; rather the story takes over and envelopes the reader into another world, another time, and another way of life, all in a totally believable way. While the principal protagonist is a young Indian girl, the Vision Seeker, both genders will be inspired by this story as the youngsters band together to survive as a tribe. Because the heroine undergoes a traditional rite marking the biological passage into womanhood, the story seems suitably categorized as Young Adult.
This book was a joy to read excellent research, intriguing plot line, and strong characters, both male and female. I recommend it to anyone who is interested in early American History. Its content is appropriate for high school American History reading lists, and will generate great discussions. On a personal note, I grew up in North Carolina where the Tuscarora lived. I knew nothing about their customs and traditions. Now, I do!

The Vision Seeker A Tale of the Tuscarora is a book I would have read and re-read and re-read in middle school through high school. I've just read it as an adult, and plan to enjoy it again before passing it along to grandchildren. This novel compels the reader to turn the next page, as it recounts the dramatic journey of the orphaned Tuscarora children led by The Vision Seeker, at 14, not much more than a child herself. It shows the strength and doggedness of these children as they put into practice lessons taught by their elders. Sanders' mammoth research effort is evident in the carefully recorded detail of dress, dwellings, diet and customs - the very customs that drive Vision Seeker to muster on with her group in an effort to preserve their clans' identities. The characters are well-drawn and their feelings are palpable, yet there is no hint of sensationalism or melodrama. Buy this book for the adolescent or pre-adolescent girl on your shopping list.
