Mankind has spread to dozens of worlds throughout the universe, and traveling to another world is as simple as stepping through a wormhole or walking onto a Starliner to travel through hyperspace. Finding true love across the vastness of space has been relegated to mathematical algorithms and supercomputers.
Keylann Ascentia is looking for love. With the aid of her Mate Technician, Torina Gates, her search takes her to new worlds. As much as some things change, others remain the same. Sometimes, when you least expect it, love finds you.
Made in the Stars edition by Jim Proctor Cynthia Shepp Literature Fiction eBooks
I am a huge fan of science fiction and an even greater fan of short stories. The two come together in this wonderfully spun tale, "Made in the Stars" by Jim Proctor.Keylann is looking for a soul-mate and will go anywhere in the universe to find one. She hires a "Mate Technician" (Torina) to ferret out possibly matches across the galaxy, and this is where the story begins.
With wormholes to get from planet to planet, the travel is easy and the other worlds can be reached within hours. The only drawback to this interstellar travel is wormhole sickness, but nothing that a good visit to a "freshening facility" cannot remedy.
After several dates that do not go very well, Keylann does not want to go on any more and considers hiring a new mate technician. But Torina convinces her to try one last time and assures Keylann that this last date will be perfect.
The ending is not at all what I had expected, but had a lovely twist that proves soul-mates (at least in this story) can be found anywhere in the universe.
Well done, Mr. Proctor!

Made in the Stars edition by Jim Proctor Cynthia Shepp Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I liked this story. It was really cute and sweet. I was really intrigued with all the worlds and was really fascinated with the futuristic technology. I wanna travel by wormhole to distant planets.
My only complaint is that I did think the ending was a tad rainbows and kittens.
I would recommend this short story for those looking for a quick read in the science fiction romance genre
Made in the Stars is a brilliant short story. Soulmates. Sometimes we look so hard for a companion, for love... that we miss out on what the universe has in store for us. Even though I wish this short story had been a little longer, the author took us for a wonderful ride through the Sci/Fi world, weaving together a story of finding love where we least expect it. Made in the Stars has made me a fan of this author and his writing style. I'll be anxiously awaiting more from Jim Proctor. Well done!
This was a very cool story, filled with all the elements a reader could want. I was impressed with the writing, the fantasy the world, and how the author was able to weave a love story into science fiction. I highly recommend this story and am now currently reading another by this author.
It's been a while since I've read a short story with no obligation to review it.
Let me explain how amusing this story was to me with this one quote
“This isn’t some backwards planet,” he interrupted. “We have all the latest reconstructive nanotechnology available. If you turned out to be a really nice person, we could fix all of your physical flaws.”
Anyway, I enjoyed this story and it was really cute. I wish there was more to it at the end, because it felt a bit too rushed... like it was shoved into a pretty box with a fancy bow.
All and all, I give this book 4/5 platypires
I didn't realize it was a short story when I started reading it, so as I was grooving alone on this lovely story about a woman named Keylann who is seeking love in a universe where humanity is all over the place...yeah, and you think it's hard finding a date on Earth...lol. Their version of E-Harmony are Mate Technicians, like personal match makers. The story is very enduring.
A great quick sci-fi romance read. 5 Stars!
I thought I should add more here. If you've ever read Jim Proctors other novels, you know he has a huge talent in showing us the advanced technology of these other futuristic civilizations. In Made in the Stars, I especially loved the wormholes the people use to get from planet to planet.
Keylann can't seem to find a suitable mate. Torina, her mate technician seems to be doing all she can to help her. Keylann must travel through wormholes to travel other worlds sometimes for her prospective dates. will she ever find herself a mate? Sometimes what we are looking for is not so far away after all...
What a super cool short story this is! I loved the science fiction aspect, going through different portals, wondering what that would be like! this was a different genre for me, and I am so glad I read it!
This is a short story, and that is one of my complaints about it. It whetted my appetite for the worlds portrayed, but it didn't satisfy the hunger it created. I would have absolutely loved it if it were developed into a full length book (I think), showing me more details of the worlds, daily life, and the dates. I can't hold it's brevity against it for my rating though, so I won't, but I really would love to read a longer version of the story.
In spite of it's brevity, I felt like this story did a great job of showing us the advanced technology of this future civilization, at least the technology that was pertinent to the story. Even though I didn't get a very good sense of what the worlds looked like, the tech was pretty solid in my mind.
My other complaint is tied in heavily to the brevity of the story. For me it had a feeling of instal-love to it because everything happened quickly in the story. While I can actually accept that this society propagates itself via instal-love and Mate Techs, it didn't feel right for the main characters story line, and it didn't sit well with me. If the story were longer, I don't think it would have felt quite so rushed.
Overall I give this story 4 out of 5 stars because it kept me engaged and I could visualize the tech, but the world building could have been better. This would make a nice short read for your lunch break though.
